16 Jan Spotted!
The Mabula Private Game Reserve Leopard Project is a new initiative aimed at understanding the population dynamics of the leopards of Mabula and the surrounding area. Not all of these leopards stay permanently within Mabula but are known to move between the Reserve and the surrounding farms. Using remote camera traps, the dedicated leopard researchers are able to photograph leopards and then identify them by looking at the unique patterns of spots around their whiskers.
The aim is ultimately to compile an identification guide to the leopards of Mabula which can be shared with guests, who can then report on which leopards they have seen. In this way we will be able to understand a lot more about these elusive big cats, and what steps are necessary to help conserve them.
